My name is Juergen. Most people know me by my nickname “baudsch” (for non-german speakers my nickname may be hard to pronounce). I was born in March 1976.

These are my brother (in red) and I (in green). At this time it was clear that I will get a motorcycle some day. :-) But it took many many years, until I was nearly 30, till I bought one. Some family members and relatives were not very amused.

I grew up on the countryside, in a village called Sieggraben, in Burgenland, in the eastern part of Austria. Over the years I lived in Vienna, Wiener Neustadt and Eisenstadt.

I work(ed) in the computer business and had jobs as Programmer, Administrator, Consultant, Quality Manager, … in different companies, as employee and as freelancer.

I can’t remember when the travel-virus in me broke out. According to stories of my parents, I was always homesick when I was a child. When I was young we spent some holidays in Austria. But when we went somewhere, I always wanted to go home.

It all started after the military service. I went into a travel agency (internet was not so popular 1997) and went out with a ticket to Miami for two weeks.

I arrived in the middle of the night in Miami, no place to sleep and no idea. First thing was, that a limousine driver took a lot of money from me to bring me to Miami Beach (I learned it the hard way). Anyway, I spent two fantastic weeks in Miami and Key West.

Ich / Me

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: “A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have …”

A lot of experiences in different countries followed. But you can read that on my homepage, sometimes with photos, sometimes with a travel report.

about the tour

I spent the most time of the past 6 years (09.2006 – 09. 2012) with studying while working full time. It wore me out, physical and mental. In addition the major amount of my free time has gone. Work was not so fun anymore too. For me a good reason to think about  a change.

So: pushing the career or taking a hiatus? A friend said one day: “I know a lot of career people, but you are none of them.” I think he was right – in that case: hiatus … the second time after 9 months off in 2004, where I spent 5 1/2 months driving around Australia.

So, whereto and how long? Going North or East? Europe, Africa, Asia or once again to Australia? There were a lot of ideas and possibilities. I investigated, made plans and dismissed them.

Based on the planed time frame May 2013 to May 2014 and, considering the climatic condition, the plan developed to travel the American continent from East to West and North to South.

Estimated start is between mid and end of May 2013 in Halifax. Next big goal is Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. After that down to Panama. In Panama I will try to find a cheap possibility to cross the Darien Gap to Colombia or Ecuador. Then down to Punta Arenas, Chile.

Update 19.05.2013

I was in Australia with two friends in March 2013. I fell an injured my knee. Therefore I had to postpone my journey for two months. New start is/was mid of July 2013. I also changed my route. I will head South in East USA and I will do Alaska and Canada at the end of the journey.

So far the plan, but you never know …

Sorry for my NOT so perfect English. I hope it will get better during the journey. Feel free to correct me.
